In the classroom, Andre built a powerful legacy. Over 31 years as a German teacher, he was known for bringing energy, passion, and real-world connection into his teaching. He didn’t just teach language; he brought it to life. Through 20–25 trips to Europe, Andre gave students the rare opportunity to experience different cultures firsthand, traveling across more countries than most will see in a lifetime. Those experiences left a lasting impact far beyond the classroom.

Holding a BS/BT in German, with minors in Computer Science and Coaching, along with a Master’s degree in Sport Psychology/Physical Education, Andre blended education, coaching, and mentorship in a way that made him truly unique.

He also pioneered mental performance training in wrestling, leading a program for the Minnesota Storm for over 20 years. His work in visualization, cueing, relaxation, and performance techniques helped shape modern mental training in the sport. He holds four copyrights on his program, “YAATTZZEEEE: The Mental Edge.”

From world-level competition to the classroom, from coaching champions to developing minds, Andre Harnitz’s influence reaches far beyond wins and titles.

Andre Harnitz’s impact on wrestling and education spans generations, and his legacy is one that few can match.

As a youth wrestler, Andre set the tone early, winning multiple National Freestyle titles and becoming a World Schoolboy Freestyle Champion in 1979. At Mankato East High School, he built a dominant career, earning a place in the Hall of Fame, compiling a 94.79% win percentage, and finishing as a State Finalist with a 91–5 record.

He continued his success at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where he became a 2x NCC Champion and 2x Academic All-American, while holding the program’s wins record for years.

Coached by the legendary Rummy Macias, Andre established himself as both an elite competitor and student-athlete. Following college, he competed on the USA Greco-Roman National Team from 1993–1995, becoming the first American to win the prestigious Petrov Cup in Bulgaria. His international career took him across Europe, competing in France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, and Bulgaria.

As a high school coach at Mankato East and Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial, Andre built powerhouse programs:

  • 332 dual meet victories

  • 7x Section Coach of the Year

  • 13 State Champions coached

  • 7 State Tournament team appearances, placing 5 times

His legacy lives on in every athlete, student, and coach he has impacted.

Congratulations on your retirement, Andre, and thank you for everything you’ve given to this community!
