Asthma Information
At our school, our mission for children with Asthma is centered around ensuring that every child with Asthma has a comprehensive plan in place to effectively manage and treat Asthma-related issues. This commitment involves a multi-faceted approach to support the health and well-being of these students:
Individual Health Plan/Emergency Plan for Asthma:
Students known to have Asthma are encouraged to fill out an Individual Health Plan/Emergency Plan for Asthma or RAD (Rescue Inhaler) in collaboration with the school's nursing team.
These plans serve to map out expectations for nursing staff, the student, and other school personnel involved in the student's care throughout the school day.
Tailored Strategies for Asthma Management:
The individualized plans may include strategies such as taking rest breaks after recess or physical education activities.
Students may be required to use a rescue inhaler as ordered while at school, ensuring that necessary medication is readily available.
Self-Carrying Rescue Inhalers:
For those students authorized by a physician, the option to self-carry a rescue inhaler with clear instructions and doctor's orders is facilitated.
This empowerment allows students to take an active role in their Asthma management and ensures quick access to medication when needed.
Accurate Information and Education:
Our commitment extends to keeping students up to date with accurate information about Asthma management.
Ongoing education ensures that both students and staff are well-informed about Asthma, its symptoms, and the appropriate steps to take in case of an emergency.
Medical Authorization for Inhaler Use:
Students, regardless of age, using an inhaler must have a signed order from their physician.
This order specifies whether the inhaler should be kept in the Health Office or if the student is permitted to self-carry. Any questions regarding this protocol can be addressed with the school nurse.
By implementing these measures, we aim to create a supportive and informed environment that prioritizes the health and safety of students with Asthma, ultimately fostering a successful and inclusive learning experience for all.
