Goals for the Community Service Letter Program:

* Students will learn about themselves and their community through active service to others. 

* Students will understand Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial's Core Values.

* Students will learn problem solving skills.

* Students will learn to evaluate their own work.

When someone performs an action which benefits his or her community, it is known as community service. Some people associate community service with punishment, since it is often offered to small-time offenders as an alternative to fines or jail time. However, community service can also be altruistic, and it is a vital part of many small communities. Getting involved in your community makes it healthier and livelier, and numerous organizations around the world support community service activities.

Many people engage in community service because they believe that it carries rewards beyond the obvious and tangible. Clearly, engaging in things like environmental restoration and civic beautification will make your life enjoyable by making the world around you more pleasant. Community service can also help to ensure that important services like meals for the elderly and volunteer fire departments continue to run. It also helps to build a rich and supportive community of people who know each other and lend each other a hand when it is needed.

Q.  How many hours do I need?

          The graduation requirement is 16 hours between grade 9-12.

Q.  What can I do?

          Community Service hours can be earned helping people outside of the immediate family,

          e.g., raking leaves, shoveling snow, walking ditches to pick up trash, tutoring or by doing

          other community or church activities.

Q.  If I am looking for service opportunities, are there places I can look to sign up for hours?

          Yes, they are posted in the school bulletin.

Q.  Can I start my own Community Service idea/project?

         Yes! Contact the Community Ed. office for more information.

Q.  Can I receive money or compensation for my service hours?

          No. Students are not allowed to take money for service.

          In the Community Ed. Office

Q.  Where do I turn in the signed form?

          To the Community Ed. office or the Secondary office.

Q.  How do I check how many hours I have completed?

          On the bulletin board outside of the Community Ed office or on Infinite Campus.

Q.  Can my parent sign my form?

          Only if your parent is the head or chair of the group that you are doing service for.

         If not, the person or organization that you are doing service for needs to sign.

Q.  I am a new or transfer student. Do I have to do 16 hours?

          Hours will be pro-rated for new or transfer students at a rate of 4 hours per year.
