LCWM Coach to be Honored in October
COACH: (n) an athletic instructor or trainer or (v) train or instruct
A Google search will provide these two definitions of coach, along with a few others; however, to LCWM teacher and coach, John Madsen, it is more than that. That may be the reason he’s been coaching for 33 years and why he was recently selected for induction into the Minnesota State High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Believe it or not, his favorite part about his 33 years of coaching isn’t necessarily winning, it’s the relationships he has developed with other coaches, former players, and the current players. When asked to list a few of his favorite aspects of coaching, Madsen stated, “Observing the progression of the players from the first day of practice to the end of the season is pretty gratifying.”
A few of Madsen’s highlights include advancing to the state tournament in 1997 and taking consolation honors when there were only two classes and 36 teams per section. One of his most memorable experiences was coaching in the 2011 state championship at Target Field. Madsen commented, “Our LCWM team had to win twice in the section finals just to advance to play in the 2011 state tournament.”
John will be recognized during the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, October 27 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Minneapolis. Along with Madsen, coaches from the University of Minnesota, Hastings High School, Minneapolis Washburn High School, Renville County West High School, ACGC, and Jackson County Central High School have also been selected for induction.
Thank you, John, for your dedication to the LCWM athletic department throughout the years, and good luck this season!
